In April 1993, the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother began ministry in the Dominican Republic. Sisters are feeding breakfast and teaching the children near the border of Haiti, helping establish documentation so the children and young adults can go to school or get a job, dispensing medication, delivering food to the people who live by the river in Santiago de los Caballeros, and attending to the spiritual needs of the people.
Through the SSM Foundation the poorest of the poor are served in preschool centers and rural health clinics. Young adults are prepared to make their way in life in the literacy and vocational training centers, and the needs of the elderly are being addressed through programs.
The Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother, in collaboration with other dedicated organizations and local people, have made a difference in the lives of so many. There is an ongoing water project in collaboration with International Rotary Clubs. The communities are receiving water filters--one family at a time.
