In 1884 the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother opened their home to orphaned and neglected children in Rome and also started home health care to the sick. In 1889 they continued their care of the sick in the United States when they took over a small 12 bed hospital in Kansas from the Sisters of Mercy on December 11, 1889.
Through the grace of God, the sisters established five new hospitals in Wisconsin before 1894, and in the years that followed, healthcare services were extended to New Jersey, Minnesota, New Mexico, Iowa, and Oklahoma.
Today, the corporate health ministry of the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother continues through Marian Health System and the sponsorship of three regional health systems: Ministry Health Care with corporate offices in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, St. John Health System in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Via Christi Health System in Wichita, Kansas, the site of the sisters’ first hospital.
