St. Rose Modern
Secondary School
|
On March 1, 1963, the Sisters of the Sorrowful Mother acquired an estate located in Gouyave, Parish of St. John on the island of Grenada, West Indies. On September 12, 1963, two sisters arrived from Barbados to begin St. Rose Convent. They first worked at a government school before they resigned to focus on remodeling a house on the property, an old stone building formerly used as a storehouse and drying place for cocoa, and turned it into a school. St. Rose Modern Secondary School was opened in September 1966, and today serves approximately 400 students.
St. Rose has excelled in its educational goals. It was the first school in Grenada to be co-educational and one of the first schools to train for exams from Cambridge and to give diplomas for a less academically focused curriculum. Repeatedly the students have received distinctions and graduates have been successful in a variety of careers because of the faith-centered and solid educational foundation given by the teachers of St. Rose.
